Consultant Medical Oncologist in Melanoma and Acute Oncology Full Time

at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Manchester in Manchester (Published at 06-11-2023)

The successful candidate will join a team with an international reputation in the research and treatment of melanoma. The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide consultant level care for patients with Melanoma. This includes providing outpatient care through the outpatient clinics and day case units where Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy Treatments are delivered, as well as inpatient care on the main adult oncology wards. In addition, there is a requirement to provide advice and guidance for melanoma patients admitted to other hospitals in the region. There are opportunities for research, teaching and development of the service.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of patients with melanoma receiving standard therapy and in phase II/III trials including treatment decisions and ongoing care. They will be a core member of the MDT and work closely with other members of this. They will participate in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit.
They successful candidate will contribute to current research projects and will be encouraged to establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team. The successful candidate will undertake revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.
There is an expectation that the successful candidate will maintain a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians. They will contribute to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on oncology topics and providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme. There is an opportunity to lead on a number of teaching initiatives.

The appointee will be based at The Christie and will provide senior input to the following areas of delivery:


  • Outpatient clinics

  • SACT Services – Oak Road Treatment Centre, Christie @ Home, Outreach

  • Inpatient Services - primarily Wards 11, 12, 4 and the Oncology Assessment Unit

  • Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings

  • Team meetings

  • Educational meetings

  • Audit


The role will be responsible for:


  • Management of patients with melanoma receiving standard therapy and in phase I/II/III trials including treatment decisions and ongoing care.

  • Participating in all relevant aspects of clinical governance, including maintaining up to date protocols, guidelines and clinical audit

  • Contributing to current research projects and establish new opportunities to expand and develop research within the team.

  • Revision and development of evidence-based protocols for patients and undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients.

  • Maintaining a level of continuing professional development consistent with the recommendations of the Royal College of Physicians.

  • Contributing to the undergraduate teaching of medical students on oncology topics.

  • Providing lectures for the busy postgraduate teaching programme.

  • Actively contributing to the training of junior doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both in-patient and outpatient departments.

  • Undertaking clinical audit as a member of The Christie Medical Staff Committee.

The appointee will have office accommodation and access to secretarial support appropriate to the 10PA role. There is provision for both flexible working and working from home where applicable to the appointee’s timetable.
