Job Description

The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for providing technical support for the database estate including overseeing the development and organization of the databases, performance tuning, assessment and implementation of new technologies and providing a long-term perspective on the relationship of database technology to the business. It is extremely important to AJ Bell that on-line processing database systems offer the highest reliability and performance possible.


The DBA will need to work closely with all the teams within Technology Services to provide support, maintenance, and updates as a result of Service Desk calls, planned maintenance or planned updates and software releases.


What does the job involve?


The key responsibilities of the role are as follows:



  • Maintenance of all databases across the live, test and DR environments.

  • Performance testing and approval of all SQL Scripts to be run against the database instances, as part of the change management process.

  • Ensure database availability and performance is within internal and external SLAs.

  • Actively monitor the servers and their performance.

  • Independently investigate and resolve database issues with both In-House and Third Party. applications. Perform database upgrades.

  • Apply Third Party upgrade and service packs.

  • Establish and maintain appropriate end-user database access control levels.

  • Ensure backup operations are successful.

  • Capacity and architecture planning.

  • Test and implement data fixes for Service Desk calls assigned to the DBA team.

  • Assist the Enterprise Architecture Team on the best database technology for future database projects.

  • Carry out disaster recovery tests to prove the recovery model works.


About you:



  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand complex processes.

  • A good understanding of relational and non-relational databases.

  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.

  • An ability to see the bigger picture and challenge current processes.

  • Effective time management and the ability to prioritise and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

  • Self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail. Team-oriented, collaborative.

  • 5 years+ experience Microsoft SQL Server.

  • Understanding of relational and non-relational database systems.

  • NoSQL databases such as MongoDB

  • SQL Server clustering, Replication and High Availability.

  • Performance Tuning of SQL Server databases.

  • Upgrades and migrations of legacy systems to new SQL versions.
