Jisc Grade: from £40,000 per annum negotiable depending on experience
Contract: Permanent
Working hours: 35 hours per week and part of an on-call rota
Location: London based at the Network Operations Centre for the first 6 months and thereafter field based when required

The NOC team:
The Janet network division is aligned to the; Design – Build – Operate model for service delivery and support.
The Janet NOC is recognised as a centre of excellence for operational and delivery networking, all Janet network engineers are expected to promote this role and to perform their duties in a way that maintains the high profile achieved by Jisc, at all levels The Janet network service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to formal duties, it is expected that within reason, that engineering staff will be available at any time to assist with major problems, network emergencies, and build activities.

About the role:


  • The network engineer role has responsibility for the delivery, availability, integrity, and management of all network services that are offered via the Janet network, working with our members and customers to manage their network services

  • All members of Janet Network Operations are expected to be highly self-motivated, be able to work under their own initiative without immediate supervision in addition to also working as part of an operational team

  • Provide fault diagnosis and timely resolution of day-to-day network faults and incidents, upon escalation from the Jisc Service Desk (JSD), fellow engineers or other colleagues

  • Engineers are expected to be able to produce, develop and maintain operational procedures, work instructions and other appropriate documentation.

We’re looking for someone with:


  • Solid understanding of TCP/IP protocol, including DNS, with a good working knowledge of IPv6.

  • Solid understanding of LAN/WAN protocols and technologies in a Juniper, Cisco or other mainstream network-vendor environment - with experience of implementing, managing and supporting IP-based networks in a large environment.

  • Sound working knowledge of major routing protocols and topologies - especially OSPF, IS-IS and BGP.

  • Strong problem-solving skills.

  • Hold a valid full UK driving licence and be capable and willing to travel and work away from the based location – at times, out of normal working hours.


If you are successful, you will be based at the London or Manchester office every working day during the first 6 months during your probationary period.
