Overview
B & R Retail Ltd operates an established off-licence retail store in Peterborough under the Go Local Extra franchise. The business utilises integrated digital retail systems including electronic point-of-sale platforms, stock control software, supplier ordering systems and digital payment infrastructure. As the business continues to strengthen its digital retail capability and operational efficiency, we are seeking a skilled IT professional to support the management and optimisation of these technology systems.
We are looking for an experienced IT Systems Manager to oversee the operation, integration and improvement of our digital retail systems and information technology infrastructure. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director to ensure reliable system performance, data accuracy and efficient coordination with external technology providers and franchise support teams.
Duties
- Manage and maintain retail technology systems including POS platforms, inventory software and supplier ordering portals
- Monitor system performance and ensure reliability of digital retail operations
- Coordinate with external software vendors, franchise IT support teams and service providers
- Analyse existing IT systems and recommend improvements to enhance operational efficiency
- Oversee integration between business systems including stock control, reporting tools and payment systems
- Implement and monitor appropriate system security and data protection practices
- Maintain documentation of IT systems, system configurations and operational procedures
- Support system upgrades, troubleshooting and resolution of technical issues
- Provide technical advice and recommendations to support the business’s digital development Develop and maintain scalable, reliable system architectures leveraging technologies such as AWS, Azure, VMware, Kubernetes, and virtualisation platforms.
- Design and implement network solutions including VPNs, firewalls, DHCP, DNS, load balancing, and service-oriented architecture (SOA).
- Manage and optimise databases using SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, NoSQL databases such as Cassandra or MongoDB.
- Automate deployment processes through continuous integration tools like Jenkins and utilise scripting languages including Bash (Unix shell), PowerShell, Python, Ruby on Rails, C++, C#, VBA, and Shell Scripting.
- Oversee system administration tasks across operating systems including Windows, UNIX/Linux distributions (CentOS, Ubuntu), and ESXi hosts.
- Provide technical guidance on solution architecture for new projects; support system upgrades; ensure compliance with organisational policies.
Experience
- Proven experience in systems engineering with a focus on enterprise-level IT infrastructure.
- Extensive knowledge of computer networking principles including TCP/IP protocols, DNS management, DHCP configuration.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C#, JavaScript, Java; scripting skills for automation tasks are essential.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues across multiple platforms; excellent organisational skills and attention to detail are vital.
