Learning & Development (L&D) Advisor, Permanent, Grangemouth, Scotland
Our challenge; your opportunity
Following a business re-organisation, we are looking for an experienced L&D Advisor to join our team on a permanent basis. The role will be based at our Grangemouth site in the Central Belt of Scotland and support our terminals across Scotland and the North of England. The role will ideally suit someone operating as a senior L&D Advisor/Business Partner or consultant.
The Role
Reporting to the HR & L&D Team Leader, you will work closely with a small team of multi-disciplined L&D and HR professionals to support the delivery of the L&D Service to the Refinery. You will be responsible for providing L&D advice and guidance on the full range of L&D activities in support of Refinery Competence. You will also act as SME (subject matter expert) for several L&D topics.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Building positive relationships with direct and indirect stakeholders, helping to embed effective and consistent ways of learning across the Refinery
  • Provision of specialist advice on learning and development, which supports delivery of and compliance with the competence framework.
  • Supporting the delivery of a quality, cost effective L&D service, utilising innovative learning technologies
  • Facilitation of training needs analysis process to ensure the business reaches competence targets for the training year.
  • Working collaboratively with SMEs to develop and implement Competence Matrices which deliver the core competence required for each job role from an HSE, legislative and technical perspective, in line with COMAH regulations
  • Assist in the effective management of the L&D budget (c£400k)
  • Supporting L&D projects and initiatives ensuring that implementation is achieved on time and within budget
  • Conducting learning evaluations, ensuring that they are appropriately timed to measure business impact, quality of training and feed the continual improvement of the service and business needs
  • Assisting with the development and monitoring of the Graduate, Intern and Apprenticeship framework
  • Analysing and providing monthly metrics to demonstrate site competency, compliance and progress towards the delivery of the L&D Strategy

To be a strong fit for the role you will ideally be working in or have recently worked in a manufacturing/COMAH environment. You will be familiar with competence management systems in a manufacturing context, and have experience of regulated environments and COMAH regulations in relation to learning and development.
Ideally having knowledge of the assessment process for operational/maintenance will be advantageous in the role. You will work with a degree of autonomy and be someone who can hit the ground running, is able to manage a diverse portfolio of activities, work at pace and deal with changing priorities.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Degree qualified or equivalent with formal training/L&D qualification
  • Current experience of evaluating learning, ideally in a manufacturing or COMAH environment
  • Working knowledge of accredited learning/assessment procedures and apprenticeships
  • Broad specialist knowledge of L&D trends and good practice
  • Mentoring, coaching and facilitation skills
  • Ability to analyse complex information and turn in to meaningful reports
  • Able to formulate short, medium and long-term learning strategies in order to support the achievement of business objectives
  • Strong IT skills to include all Microsoft packages with recent experience of Learning Management Systems
  • Ability to prioritise own workload and deliver to deadlines
  • Able to work as part of a small dynamic team
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities
  • Strong customer focus in demand?driven environment


  • Assessor qualified L&D9D1 (D32/D33 or A1/A2 qualifications acceptable) with ability to demonstrate its recent application in a work environment ? ideally in an operational or maintenance context
  • Demonstrable experience of assessing in a technical manufacturing environment i.e. maintenance/operations skills
  • Verifier qualified L&D11 (D34 or V1 qualifications acceptable) with ability to demonstrate its recent application in a work environment
  • Working knowledge of contracts in relation to procuring training and managing external training providers
