A vacancy has arisen for a Band 6 Sister in the very busy Radiology Department at St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.



The successful candidate will lead a small team providing nursing care within the department. They will maintain the quality of nursing care delivered. They will plan and carry out nursing care and interventions on a wide range of patients ensuring effective and efficient use of resources. The role covers mainly 8am-6pm, Monday ? Friday.



The post will involve a range of nursing duties within the various modalities in Radiology - Interventional Radiology, CT, Ultrasound, MRI, etc. and will require close interaction with all the members of the multi-disciplinary Radiology team. The role involves administering of CDs and scrubbing for interventional procedures. The work is predominantly not ward based, apart from a 2 bedded day unit and cover for day case radiology patients on the CDC. The nursing staff also take a lead on IC, Medical Devices, ANTT, pharmacy link and oxygen link.



Flexibility around working hours is essential.



An Enhanced DBS Certificate, with the checking of both the Children?s and Adults? Barred Lists is required for this post.

Main duties of the job



Applicants should be enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to demonstrate a delivery of high standards of care. The department is extremely proactive and continually aims to improve its service to patients. Evidence of relevant ongoing professional development is required.



KEY DUTIES



  • To ensure a good standard of nursing care is delivered to patients using the Radiology service.

  • To plan roles for nursing staff so that nursing input is given where it is required.

  • To be responsible for ordering, sorting and safe use of drugs within the department, as per Trust policies.

  • Liaise with medical representatives from external suppliers and order specialist medical / devices equipment needed to perform procedures carried out within the departments

  • Responsible for ordering and control of stock items required to ensure the smooth running of the department. This will include domestic supplies, medical and surgical sundries.

  • Carry out daily checks on emergency equipment.

  • Liaise with other professional bodies and support staff on nursing issues and their application within Radiology.

  • Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits, complaints etc.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities



CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for assessing, developing and implementing a nursing care programme for patients requiring nursing care within departments. This will include visits to wards and liaison with outpatients to assess patients prior to undergoing interventional procedures.

  • Collection of blood samples and retrieval of results from patients prior to procedures.

  • Management of patients who may suffer reactions during the use of intravenous contrast.

  • Monitoring and safety of sedated patients during interventional procedures.

  • Monitoring and safety of all patients ensuring correct monitoring equipment is available and maintained ready for use.

  • IV Cannulation of patients requiring venous access.

  • Monitoring of diabetics undergoing investigations / procedures and quality assurance and maintenance of glucometer equipment used.

  • Assist and participate in other procedures performed on patients in the department as and when required by medical staff / radiographic staff carrying out the procedure.

  • To adhere to relevant Code of Practice of Professional body (if appropriate)

  • Communicate with patients requiring treatment / examinations required for their wellbeing and deal with anxious relatives. This may mean dealing with victims of abuse and terminally ill patients and their relatives.

  • Maintain good communication and liaison with other professionals within the department and also with other departments, to assist in the effective running of radiology


ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure all clinical records and documentation is completed in a correct and timely manner.


TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSBILITIES



  • Maintain an up to date CPD portfolio as required for registration.

  • Specialist knowledge across a range of work procedures and practices gained through experience and training.

  • Maintain an up to date knowledge and competency of nursing practice and theory.

  • Attended training in venepuncture, cannulation and IV drug administration.

  • Hold ILS/ALS certificate as required to monitor sedated patients.


LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan rota for nursing staff to ensure nursing input is given where and when it is required.

  • Attend and contribute to radiology management team meetings.

  • Responsible for leadership of nursing team within Radiology.

  • Perform annual IPR reviews of nursing staff within the department.

  • Supervise staff during periods of training

  • Ensure the availability of a link nurse for: Infection Control: Moving and Handling: Medical Devices: COSHH: Falls etc


RESEARCH & AUDIT



  • Attend regular audit meetings.

  • Take part in any clinical trials and audits.


GENERAL DUTIES



  • To observe the provisions of and adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.

  • To actively participate in the annual performance review to identify personal development needs

  • To attend Trust Statutory and Mandatory training sessions as required and any other training courses relevant to the post.
