Job overview

The postholder will undertake multiple roles such as: clinical assessment, dilution and drawing up of the vaccine from multi-dose vials, post vaccination observation, administering the vaccination and additional clinical support. Enable the delivery of vaccinations to all eligible citizens by assisting with the overall coordination of the site activity and day to day delivery of the vaccination programme. Ensuring clinic rooms and equipment are available at the start of each session.

Main duties of the job

Conduct pre-vaccination clinical assessments to confirm if the citizen meets the criteria for safe vaccination, including previous vaccinations undertaken, current health condition, assessment of any clinical conditions (medical history) and allergies.
Ensure knowledge of conditions that affect suitability for vaccination and previous vaccination history.
Confirm the identity of the citizen and the agreement of undertaking vaccination, addressing any concerns.
Ensure that the vaccination is conducted in line with the citizen?s condition (encourage standing position or provide seating option if necessary).
Administer vaccines into the citizen?s deltoid in accordance with training and local and national policies, procedures and standards.
Ensure that citizens are directed to the post vaccination observation area.
Once the vaccination is delivered, dispose clinical and non-clinical waste in bins provided at the station and ensure surfaces are wiped down.
Wear adequate PPE equipment in line with current national guidelines.
Recognise and respond as needed to any medical emergency or complications during vaccinations, this may include helping a citizen with their breathing if they have an allergic reaction to the vaccine (anaphylaxis).
Respond to queries appropriately and liaise where necessary to gain further advice or information.
Address any potential adverse reaction risks and provide the citizen with information and advice on any adverse reactions and contra indications.
Address any concerns that may arise regarding the vaccine and contra-indications with patients/citizens.
Ensure the citizen?s understanding of the vaccination implications and purpose, and get consent agreement on vaccination.
Record the medical check list and consent in the records system.
Where available, direct any citizens with accessibility needs to an accessible pod.
Assist with the configuration of the vaccination pod (pod setup, recording of required vaccine stocks and consumables, PPE and sanitisation materials)
Assist with the configuration of vaccine station: vaccine, vaccine batch, staff member administrating vaccination, date and site confirmation.
Ensure vaccine preparation (drawing-up, ensuring correct storage and providing preprepared syringes to the vaccination station). Ensure the reconstruction of the vaccine as per manufacturer?s instructions.
Perform a visual check of the vaccine type, serial number and thawing/expiry date.
Deliver the drawn-up vaccine to a vaccinator and ensure details of drawing up and vaccine are recorded by vaccine support administrator in Vaccination record System.
Assist and support the vaccination delivery (ensure national guidelines are respected regarding PPE, clinical and non-clinical waste, sanitisation).
Coordinate the infection control and waste disposal, ensuring that all activities are adhered to the highest H&S standards.
Manage the post-vaccination observation area; meet and greet citizens, ensuring they are comfortable, reassuring them post vaccine if needed.
Observe citizens that were directed to the waiting area post-vaccination and recommend a waiting time of 15 minutes.
Recognise and respond as needed to any medical emergency. This may include helping a patient with their breathing if they have an allergic reaction or adverse effects to the vaccine.
Offer any First Aid support and/or treatment using local equipment and allow a citizen suffering from an adverse reaction to be lied down if necessary.
Escalate any incident that is beyond the scope to the appropriate supervisor.

Enable more available spaces by confirming citizens are ready to leave the area.
Monitor and record any incidents and adverse reactions.
Work collaboratively with small diverse teams including our NHS doctors, nurses, and other staff.

Essential criteria

  • Educated to degree level (level 5) in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area

  • Registered Health Care Professional e.g. NMC for nurses, GPhC for pharmacists and equivalent for other healthcare professionals.

  • Current immunisation training / update or willingness to undertake

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Previous experience in similar clinical role

  • Knowledge of immunisation schedules in accordance with national recommendations

  • Experience of working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Practical skills and knowledge of cold chain procedures and medicines management

Desirable criteria

  • Specialist knowledge in a relevant subject to post graduate level
