The Education team cover pupils/students throughout their academic career ? from primary school children through to Further and Higher Education. We cover matters such as school admission appeals, exclusions, complaints, Independent Schools, Special Educational Needs, discrimination, issues of academic misconduct, issues regarding PhDs and Fitness to Practise.

This role is to support the development of our Education practice working within a small and expanding team.

You will manage your own case load and work alongside a team to develop the practice offering on behalf of the firm. The work primarily focuses on individuals who require legal advice and representation to manage the individual circumstances in which there is a conflict with the educational institution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a high quality legal service to clients of the firm to include processing new and existing instructions covering all aspects of education law work. In particular, the range of work is broad and will cover work from parents and young adults around access and also individuals working in the education sector supporting their professional career. You will work on matters related to:
    • Parental issues arising from the school admission processes, exclusions and complaints procedures

    • Access to provision for special needs establishments

    • Advice and representation for teachers in relation to their professional conduct and fitness to practice.

  • Develop your own technical knowledge and skills including:
    • Attending and taking client instructions and briefs

    • Participate in your own advocacy for matters relating to internal appeals at schools, local authorities, universities and colleges

    • Research appreciate case law and precedents to provide appropriate advice

    • Construct reports and case meeting notes

  • Meet the teams financial and quality standards through managing personal billing and administration processes in line with team procedures; taking responsibility for delegating work to the paralegal/legal administrator where appropriate; providing support for others in the team where appropriate; managing disbursements and working on ad hoc projects as and when required.

  • Develop your own personal reputation and team/firm reputation for providing a top-quality specialist service by joining in on PR initiatives, supporting IBB/team/group events, article writing, joining relevant associations and seeking out positions of responsibility to support your personal and team ambitions.

  • Develop your organisational and interpersonal skills so that: work is prioritised and progressed; you demonstrate a balance of working on your own initiative and seeking advice or guidance; your supervisor is aware of your workload and specific issues which arise on your matters and you maintain a flexible and proactive approach to work.

Person Specification


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

  • Strong LPC pass or equivalent; and

  • Hold a current clean practising certificate from the SRA.

Skills and Experience

  • Good technical grounding in education law.

  • 3 year+ post qualification (indicative) experience in ideally within the education field, representing individuals

  • Additional or supplementary experience in employment law or children work would be advantageous

  • A passion for this practice area with the real opportunity to progress and develop the practice.

  • Flexible with the ability to work to tight deadlines whilst maintaining the highest quality standards and attention to details.

  • IT literate and self-sufficient in using document management systems, MS Office and the internet as a business tool.

  • Passion to work as part of a growing and forward-thinking team.
