To commence in September 2021, the role will be for 3.5 tutors working term time as Maths Mates/ Reading Friends Tutors. Applicants can focus on Maths or Reading or a mixture of both, according to their interests and experience. The roles are permanent and part of the Leaning and Early Support Service.

This is an exciting new initiative for qualified tutors to train up adult volunteers from the council/ business/ community/ parents in schools to support young people to improve and develop their maths and reading skills to meet expected standards in maths and reading at KS2. The hours of working and term time commitment are an attractive aspect as the candidate is welcome to shape the way they work.

The tutors will be managed by the Team Leader on a day-to-day basis and strategically managed by the Acting Head of Service for Adult & Community Learning. This is a supportive team working on a range of exciting learning initiatives and there will be opportunities to engage with a wide range of tutors and provision.

The tutors will plan and develop a curriculum/ training course to train up adult volunteers to support children working below expected standards at maths/ reading in KS2 to improve their confidence and numeracy/ reading life skills. They will plan with input from Kirklees Learning Partners and KS2 primary teachers to reflect the current maths/ reading curriculum and key concepts to be covered.

The course will be piloted in schools and then rolled out to a wider audience, including council employees as part of the volunteering offer, business partners interested in volunteering in schools (banking staff for example), and community members (retired or business staff for example). There is also a clear link to post 16 college students and university students wishing to boost their CVs and gain volunteering experience by helping younger children with maths/ reading skills.

Partnership working across council departments and schools will be a major part of the role and forming links with all agencies to recruit volunteers and harness their skills.

If you want to make a difference and do something different, this could be the role for you!
