Research Associate in Smart Zero Carbon Maritime Systems Full Time

Salary: £30,942 - £40,322 per annum

The Role

You should be a dynamic, self-starter to join our team focusing on advancing our capabilities in smart and zero carbon maritime systems. You will join the Marine, Offshore and Subsea Technology (MOST) Group at the School of Engineering which comprises colleagues with expertise across a wide range of marine technology and associated disciplines.

You will be appointed as part of the EPSRC Decarbonising UK Freight Transport consortium (which, along with generous funding from the John Prime

Foundation, is funding the post) and will also develop proposals for external funding in the areas of smart (both in terms of systems and data) and zero carbon shipping, and related topics.

The position also has opportunities for contributing to our programme offerings at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Interaction with industry will be a key part of the role, in particular with partner organisations and alumni among our MSc MTEC community, and you must be able to work both on your own initiative and as part of a wider team.

Key Accountabilities

Interact with various stakeholders and develop research funding proposals, both on your initiative and as guided by the relevant staff, in the areas of smart and zero carbon shipping, and related topics.

Interact with industry to identify how our existing / new module and programme offerings can meet their emerging skills and educational requirements.

Design taught module(s) in the areas of smart and zero carbon shipping to add to our existing programme portfolio.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience


Detailed understanding of one of the following subject areas, and a satisfactory understanding of the other: marine technology, computer science.

Preparation of research proposals.

Writing research reports and papers and presenting research results.


Design and delivery of teaching materials.

Understanding of pedagogy and curriculum design.

Design and completion of surveys.

Attributes and Behaviour


Ability to work on your own initiative and to set deadlines / objectives.

Comfortable working with a diverse stakeholder group including industry,academia and other partners.

Ability to communicate your work clearly and appropriately.



PhD in a relevant subject (marine technology, computer science or other closely related discipline).
