About the role:



The world is moving at an increasingly rapid rate towards a decarbonised future that is not reliant on fossil fuels. This change presents shipping with arguably its biggest transformational challenge since the transition from sail to steam engine power in the 1800s. The industry will require step changes in ship efficiency, technology and supply chains for alternative zero GHG emissions fuels. As one of the world?s leading providers of professional services for maritime engineering and technology, Lloyd?s Register is positioned to be a key enabler for the transition.



This is an exciting opportunity to join Lloyd?s Register?s (LR) highly skilled and respected Technical Investigation Department (TID). TID has a long history of being prominent in the marine industry providing worldwide, fast response services in the areas of technical advisory, asset performance improvement, failure investigation, risk and environmental regulatory compliance. TID has a reputation for impartiality and technical excellence and is looking to recruit a marine engineering consultant with exceptional skills in leadership, innovation, project management and communication.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the advisory business within TID that provides services and products in the field of maritime decarbonisation. The decarbonisation advisory business is focused on services and digital products that provide independent assurance and verification of asset GHG emissions, and providing analysis services to optimise fuel/GHG emissions reduction, financial impact and regulatory compliance. This role will support growth in this area across the business and provide unique opportunities for career development in a rapidly changing engineering sector.



The successful candidate will be based in the south of the UK and have a home office at LR?s prestigious Global Technology Centre (GTC) on the University of Southampton campus (UK). You will also have access to many knowledgeable colleagues and training courses to pursue professional development.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Deliver marine advisory projects and product development projects (solely or as part of a team) which includes identifying, qualifying, designing the solution

  • Develop innovative services and digital products that meet clients' current and emerging challenges, particularly in the area of shipping decarbonisation and sustainability

  • Engage with internal decarbonisation stakeholders across the business to develop the strategy and execution plans for advisory services and products

  • Governance and ownership of the advisory decarbonisation revenue stream within TID

  • Prepare and deliver technical decarbonisation presentations to external and internal audiences
  • Develop marketing collateral and work with the LR marketing and communications teams on decarbonisation initiatives

  • Keep up to date with technical developments, regulations and compliance requirements in the area of decarbonisation
  • Pro-actively share knowledge and train team members in decarbonisation services and products to facilitate business growth

  • Support all the marine advisory teams and LR?s Decarbonisation Hub on an as required basis, as defined by TID management

  • Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, accreditation schemes, legislation, and industry standards

  • Pursue Continuing Professional Development and maintain a high degree of discipline, knowledge and awareness


To be considered for this position you will need:


  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd?s Register within the field of marine, mechanical engineering or data science. Post graduate degree in engineering (MSc, MEng, or PhD) is not required but would be an asset.

  • In depth knowledge of maritime decarbonisation regulations, technologies and alternative fuels

  • Familiarity with data science technologies such as Python, databases and cloud computing

  • Proven ability to manage an engineering team

  • Strong consultancy and engineering oriented mindset with proven ability in written and verbal communication

  • An enquiring mind that can identify business opportunities and develop them into value added solutions

  • Ambitious, positive and self-motivated attitude

  • Ability to work on your own or as part of a team on larger projects

  • Proven ability in the project management process, gained through experience, involving complex projects and stakeholder relationships

  • Willing to travel when required

  • Attend LR's Southampton Global Technology Centre as required for client and team meeting

  • Proficiency in the English language commensurate with the work

  • You will need the right to work in the UK to perform in this role
