Group Services Accountant (IT) Full Time

£32,900 - £49,300 depending on skills and experience + annual bonus

Our SSE Finance function has a key part to play in fulfilling SSE's obligations as a UK-listed company, providing expertise and services that can be shared across the SSE Group, and working in partnership with all businesses to provide services tailored to their specific needs. What is the Role?

The Group Services Accountant - IT is responsible for providing the accurate and timely execution of general accounting, period end closing, and reporting activities, and delivery of reporting information to the wider Operational IT and Business Unit Finance community in line with defined reporting protocols.

This encompasses Income Statement responsibility for Central and Shared IT costs totalling c.£80m per annum as well as c.£30m of Central and Shared project spend. The Group has recently undertaken a carve-out of Direct opex and capex costs to each Business Unit, however it is expected that there may be residual ad-hoc reporting activity required for those costs as devolved processes and controls are embedded.

The role is supported by the IT Portfolio Office team, responsible for project administration and reporting, as well as the IT Support Finance Business Partner and reports into the Chief Accountant.

This is a varied and challenging role with responsibilities including:

  • Preparation of routine accounting journals and Balance Sheet account reconciliations to maintain ledger accounting discipline
  • Preparation of monthly management accounts, including variance analysis against budget and forecast
  • Preparation of periodic forecasting and budgeting analysis, ensuring updates are validated, reconciled, recorded and reported on a timely basis
  • Identify and action process and control improvement initiatives and opportunities in accordance with LEAN thinking practices.

What do I need?

We are looking for a fully qualified accountant (ICAS, ICAEW, ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA) with experience operating in a finance operations role within a large organisation.

You?ll have good knowledge of core financial systems and general accounting policies and procedures as well as knowledge and understanding of Financial Control and Governance Frameworks.

You should also be able to demonstrate the following;

  • In depth knowledge of ERP software (Oracle desirable)
  • Awareness of current regulations including IFRS/ New UK GAAP and Companies Acts
  • Excellent communication, both verbal and written, and presentation skills
  • Experience of presenting financial information to operational and financial colleagues
  • Able to work to tight timescales, under pressure and deliver to a high standard
