Senior Software Developer Full Time

at UK Government - Department for Education Coventry in Coventry (Published at 16-11-2020)

You will lead a team of outstanding software developers to help build and run great digital services. Ensure high quality output through collaboration with other teams and disciplines and assist in defining and enhancing the approaches taken to the creation and delivery of software solutions.

As a Senior Software Developer you will lead on both front and backend web development including the creation of internal and public facing APIs. Work with technical architects, test leads, and DevOps colleagues to create the best solutions and to ensure the smooth transition from development through to production and take responsibility for the support of the applications you build, including occasional support outside of office hours.

Ensure code conforms to industry best practices, Government Digital Service (GDS) standards, internal development guidelines and aligns with the strategic vision of the Department for Education.

Take a leading role in the Developer Clan community of practice by helping to prioritise and present topics for the Apprenticeship Service and the wider development community. Help identify good practices for adoption and share our experience and knowledge with the wider team of both technical and non-technical colleagues.


Responsibilities

  • To understand their own work area, be able to quickly get up to speed with issues.
  • Have a good understanding of the links to other areas and how their work fits within the structure of the organisation as well as having a good understanding of the external business environment.
  • To have technical expertise that allows them to make sound and balanced judgements.
  • To have the ability to persuade and influence senior grades and stakeholders and advise and have the expertise to be able to guide more junior colleagues on complex issues within their area of the business.
  • Sound analytical skills and good judgement to inform their decisions or when providing opinions or advice to.
  • To engage with the technical architects to ensure designs are appropriate and then ensure those designs are implemented by the team.
  • Ensure the team are producing high quality, well-tested software that conforms to all technical guidance and standards.
  • Ensure any reusable code created and any innovative work done within the team is communicated.
  • Share knowledge of tools and techniques with the wider team of developers and non-developers.
  • Be involved in the recruitment process and where appropriate, help sift and interview.
  • Take an active role in the Developer Clan community of practice

Key Criteria/Experience

Essential:

  • The ability to deliver clean and maintainable code that meets requirements and conforms to best practices
  • Highly skilled in full stack development using Microsoft technologies
  • Cloud platform development experience
  • Understanding of distributed version control systems and their usage
  • An ability to communicate at all levels to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experienced in providing hands on technical leadership

Desirable:

  • Experience of delivering in an agile environment
  • Comfortable presenting at user groups and community events
  • Experience creating and supporting public APIs
  • Microsoft Azure Cloud platform development experience
  • An understanding of distributed, enterprise level, applications
  • Comfortable coding in the open using public repositories on a hosted service such as GitHub
  • Experience with code analysis tools
