Student Placement Full Time

at UK Government - Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy in London (Published at 04-12-2019)

We will place successful candidates in a team which covers one of the four areas below:

  • Analysis of address-level meter point energy data and monitoring trends in domestic consumption by property attributes and household characteristics.

  • Analysis of oil and gas data, with a focus on helping manage the UK?s emergency oil stocks and keeping track of demand trends in aviation and road fuel sales.

  • Analysing electricity generation data for regular publications relating to the security of electricity supply and developing analysis to further the inclusion of renewable generation types.

  • Collecting and analysing data on domestic energy bills and monitoring the impact of switching between energy suppliers.

Placement students are also given the opportunity to write and contribute to published articles in these areas of work.

In order to meet the requirements of the role, the student will need to demonstrate the following competencies when completing the application form:

  • Sound analytical skills, along with a grasp of descriptive and inferential statistics;

  • Interpersonal and team working skills;

  • An ability to apply themselves to solving problems;

  • The ability to work accurately without the need for supervision on some projects; and

  • Demonstrate strong initiative to learn and use new skills rapidly to complete a project or task.

Desirable experience

  • Experience writing code to manipulate data and/or carry out statistical analysis using R/SQL/SAS/Python or another relevant language.

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Statistics - To have a sound grasp of descriptive statistics and an understanding of how statistics can help to analyse problems.

  • IT - To possess basic IT and data manipulation skills (Excel and Word in particular)
